Wall Pilates for beginners

Wall Pilates is a version of traditional Pilates that uses the wall for support. The wall gives you stability and a reference point, so it's ideal if you're starting out or find balance tricky.

It's low-impact and mainly works your core, glutes and posture. Do this routine 3 times a week with slow, controlled movements, breathing through every rep.

Sample plan

Day 1

  • Wall sit · 3 sets × 30 s
  • Wall push-ups · 3 sets × 10 reps
  • Wall roll-down: back on the wall, roll down one vertebra at a time and back up · 2 sets × 8 reps
  • Standing side leg lift with a hand on the wall · 2 sets × 12 reps

Day 2

  • Bridge with your feet on the wall · 3 sets × 12 reps
  • Standing glute kickback with wall support · 3 sets × 12 reps
  • Wall plank with hands on the wall · 3 sets × 30 s
  • Supported calf raises · 2 sets × 15 reps

Key tips

  • Keep your abs gently engaged throughout.
  • Move slowly: quality matters more than quantity.
  • Use a mat for the floor exercises.
