Getting fit before surgery (prehabilitation)

Prehabilitation means preparing physically and mentally in the weeks before planned surgery. Arriving in better shape often helps you recover faster.

It usually combines walks, gentle strength work, breathing exercises and healthy habits such as not smoking and eating well. Ask your surgeon or physiotherapist what's right for your case.

Sample plan

Session 1

  • Walk at a comfortable pace, building up gradually · 1 sets × 20 min
  • Sit-to-stand from a chair · 2 sets × 10 reps
  • Wall push-ups · 2 sets × 10 reps
  • Supported calf raises · 2 sets × 12 reps
  • Deep breathing: inhale slowly through your nose and exhale fully · 2 sets × 60 s

Key tips

  • If you smoke, quitting before surgery improves recovery: ask your doctor how.
  • Eat enough protein and stay hydrated.
  • Practise the exercises you'll be given for afterwards, so you already know them.
